Wilmington, Delaware is a great place to spend the spring and summer months with numerous activities, events and attractions to visit with the whole family. 

Whether you're relocating to Wilmington or Newark DE, simply visiting for the weekend or wanting to get out and explore the community, consider the following 8 things to do and see. There's something for everyone on the list!

  • DuPont Environmental Education Center

FREE! Hands-on activities and exhibits are housed in this 4-story nature center located on Wilmington's Riverfront.

  • Delaware Center for Contemporary Arts

FREE! With rotating exhibitions among its seven galleries, this local museum has been called "one of the most innovative and prominent organizations of its kind on the East Coast," by the Philadelphia Inquirer. 

  • Delaware Museum of Natural History

Here you can find life-size dinosaurs, an African watering hole, undersea adventure and even get up close to a jaguar! 

  • Brandywine Park

Enjoy a stroll, have a picnic, bike from Brandywine Park to Rockford Park. 

  • Wilmington & Western Railroad

The railroad has become one of the East Coast's premier scenic tourist railroads and is ready to celebrate its 50th season this year.

Upcoming Events Start Thinking Spring in Wilmington, Delaware

With all of the cold weather we've been experiencing lately, it's hard to think spring. We are just one month away from the start of the new season and Wilmington, DE is packing the calendar with events to get you out and about. 

If you're starting to feel a touch of cabin fever this winter (and especially this week!), here are a few upcoming events in Wilmington that can lift your spirits.

Lecture: How to Get a Lush, No-Fuss Garden
When: Every Wednesday through February 25, 2015; 7 PM
Where: Delaware Center for Horticulture, Wilmington DE

Planning a garden is one easy way to start thinking spring and many Wilmington DE homeowners may be looking to do so in order to boost their curb appeal. With this lecture series every Wednesday through February 25, you can learn to garden smart with plants suited to thrive locally in Delaware.

Art on the Town
When: First Friday of every month (excluding January); 5:30 PM to 8 PM
Where: Art galleries, museums, storefronts and studios around Wilmington, DE 

Local art venues including galleries, museums and studios open their doors on the first Friday of every month to allow Wilmington area residents to meet local artists— and the event is back after one month off! Take a self-guided tour of the galleries during Art on the Town, also known as the Art Loop, and experience the local culture and arts scene.

Wilmington Library Chocolate Festival
When: March 14, 2015; 11 AM to 2 PM
Where: Wilmington Institute Library; Wilmington DE

Get out of the house and dive straight into a baking contest open to the public and local chefs! There will be amateur and professional categories for judging, vendors, raffle items, activities for the kids and lots of chocolate tastings! Admission is $2 and tasting tickets are .50. 

Egg Drop Challenge
When: March 14, 2015; 1 PM
Where: DuPont Environmental Education Center; Wilmington DE

Becoming an annual attraction in Wilmington, the Egg Drop challenge is a fun event for families! Teams earn points and use them to "purchase" materials for the challenge and protect the team egg. The egg is dropped off the balcony and the team whose egg that makes it through the drop in one piece wins!

From spending a weekend on the Riverfront to catching a baseball game, this season will be filled with great events and something for the whole family to enjoy. This Father's Day weekend is no exception! Dad will love to catch a baseball game or take in an exhibit at the local museum, so mark these on your calendar. Admission to this Father's Day event is free (with general admission), held at the Delaware Children's Museum this Friday through Sunday. This is a great opportunity for kids to bring Dad out for a day of fun and create a special, one-of-a-kind Father's Day card for him. A chance to celebrate Dad and bonus, enjoy the rest of the museum this weekend!

Retro*Active Performance Art from 1964-1987
Saturday, June 14, 2014; 10 AM to 4 PM
Delaware Art Museum

Performance art was made popular in the mid 1960's and has grown over the past few decades to include music, theater, technology, dance and most importantly, audience participation. This is an interactive event that goes hand-in-hand with the Museum's "Performance Now" showing. This historical view of performance art will be available nearly all day Saturday and involves artists like Chris Burden, Dan Graham, Joan Jonas, Paul McCarthy, Yoko Ono, and Carolee Schneemann to really showcase the movement.

Little Shop of Horrors

Kick off Father's Day weekend early with a performance of Little Shop of Horrors by the Wilmington Drama League. The showing includes three musical female narrators, star-crossed lovers, and a crazy florist for one fun-filled evening. Little Shop of Horrors put on by this great local group is just the entertainment you need to segue into a relaxing weekend.

Blue Rocks vs. Carolina Mudcats

What better way to spend a Dad-dedicated weekend than at a baseball game? And the local Wilmington Blue Rocks at that. A great place to pick up last minute holiday gifts and creative bits for those on your list! Shop for locally-made art and crafts for holiday gift giving at this FREE Newark event. All art by local artists is guaranteed to be unique and to make your loved ones feel special. There will be 11 artists selling jewelry, mosaics, felt ornaments, photography, watercolors, handweaving, fiber art, pottery, tie dye and batik and window ornaments. A portion of the proceeds benefits NAA programs. 

Santa Claus Express
Through December 22, 2013; 12:30 PM and 2:30 PM
Wilmington and Western Railroad, Greenbank Railroad Station

Why stand in line at the mall and wait to see Santa when you can ride the train and have Santa come to you? The Jolly Old Elf himself rides the train and greets everyone on board and gives all children a chocolate treat. PLUS he may even bring Mrs. Claus with him! Be sure to bring the camera and have Santa pose for pictures with your child during this 1½-hour round-trip to Ashland. This event is powered by one of the railroad's antique steam locomotives. 

The Sound of Christmas

A festive opportunity to listen to the sounds of the season at Grand Opera House in Wilmington. Come enjoy familiar songs of the holidays starring Elisabeth von Trapp, acclaimed granddaughter of the "Sound of Music" family, with the Carolina Brass.

At the Grand Opera House, First State Ballet Theatre will present its magical production of The Nutcracker staged by Kirov trained artistic director, Pasha Kambalov, and featuring spectacular dancing by the company's 22 professional dancers, beautiful costumes created in Russia and Tchaikovsky's beloved score.
